Saturday Club Fun....and tales...

Saturday, November 14, 2009

Day two of a quiet neighborhood. I am laying down in my room at 9pm on a Saturday and it is quiet….so nice.

I really love my work – sometimes I get a little geeked out that God has called me into this ministry and it possibly could be the hardest work I will ever know. That also excites me, to tell you the truth. This morning Mama Lorella and I met with Sarita from the Zion Project. I mostly sat there (and ate the BEST granola yogurt parfait EVER and some coffee) and listened. It was really interesting. It was also super cool to hear the two women talk with passion for their work. Out of it came a good start to a potential partnership. The one thing that really excited me was the potential to shadow Sarita in her work to the Congolese prostitutes. She already has been going into these areas and ministering to them. I need to get research on this and see how ECM could potentially fit with the human trafficking/slavery side of it all. I really didn’t know where to start but now I hopefully will be able to work alongside Zion and get some good ideas. This is completely foreign territory for me – I am grateful to have experienced people to help me. Pray for wisdom, safety and direction.

Saturday means Club day! YAY!!! I like these days. We did start off a bit late due to the meeting; however, it all worked out because the water in the house was turned off. Our landlord did not pay the water bill hence it being turned off. Pray that these little things are taken care of consistently and on time. PG for Melissa who got it taken care of. The landlord really is a nice guy…just kinda forgetful. Anyways, we called for a parent meeting so Mama could meet, greet and love on the parents. Well, we were late..and what do we see when we pull into the school? All our parents!! YAY and WHOOPS! It was great to see everyone but we felt bad they were waiting for us. It didn’t bother them but it did me because I want to lead by example on following up with being on time. Anyways, Mama spoke to the parents and they were VERY grateful and expressed their thankfulness. It really was a blessing. We were able to give each child a blanket and take a family photo. The blanket will be nice for the cold and/or wet nights to prevent sickness. The photos were great because it gave the parents and child a time to sit together and look like a family. Some had their hands around each other, funny faces and smiles. It was sweet

While they were doing that the kids were at their lesson and I was first aid queen again. Piloya Mercy’s burn was looking better after we told her mom to give it a cold tea soak. It was VERY bad on Friday and Mama recommended her to do that – looked better today. Pray for healing on her hand and wrist. Other children had some minor cuts, fevers and such – Ogen’s wounds on his head are getting better. He still had flies today but not as bad. I cleaned it and put some stuff on it. Last time the ointment kinda melted all over his head so today, since he had a clean hair cut, I put little band aids on his head to keep the stuff on as well as the flies off. Pray for healing on his head. I then saw little Scovia. Oh my! Last Saturday it looked so much better and I was quite confident it was on the way to full healing, but after a week of not seeing her it was absolutely horrible. Nothing I have ever seen before. I cleaned it, dressed it and let her go. By the end of club the bandages were soaked through and flies were just eating her alive. I undid the dressing and tried cleaning it again with some hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is supposed to foam a bit when there is an infection and then die down like water. Well, this just foamed like it was like shaving cream in thickness and wasn’t going down! She was in so much pain and was crying so loud. I once stopped to just hug her! I tried and tried to help but she was shaking, swatting away at the flies and just crying. My heart was just breaking so bad. I have never felt so at a loss and helpless on someone’s behalf. It was so bad…no other way to put it. I realized I just couldn’t do anything for her anymore and she needed serious medical attention and recommended we take her to the clinic in town. Simon took her and her mother to a clinic in Gulu. She received a shot and they cleaned and took care of the wound. They actually were upset with the mother for allowing it to get that bad. I can totally understand that but when you have no way to get medical attention, have no funds and are just not educated in proper health care, what can you expect? Everyone has wounds on their body at camp in some way…it is just a way of life there. It just made me realize more and more how much we need to educate parents on basics AND be able to support them by driving them. PG we have funds for Scovia through sponsorship, but what about all the kids who are not sponsored?! Pray for Scovia’s healing. I will be taking her to the clinic the next three days to continue treatment and proper cleaning. Pray that the van will work smoothly!
While Scovia was at the clinic with her mom and Simon, the rest of took profiles and then headed over to Adong Winnifred’s home for a family visit. Pray for this family. I do not think they are believers and there seems to be something there that the Spirit is leading…but what it is I am not sure. Pray for the opportunity to witness to the family.

Today, I do have to admit my patience was very tried. This whole week seems to be like that. Pray that I stay focused, calm and peaceful in my mind, mouth and actions. That would be swell…I don’t want to sway and want to remain strong in the LORD in all ways so I may reflect Him…I do not desire to fail Him by misrepresenting Him nor serving Him unfaithfully. Also pray for my co-workers to have patience and understanding with me during this time too…it isn’t anything super bad and we can talk but since we only have known each other for a month it is still good to pray on that. They really are the best and most wonderful, godly people.
